"Just Like A Woman" Song analysis
In 1965 Bob Dylan was rumored to have an intimate relationship with the iconic Edie Sedgwick. "Just Like A Woman" is widely rumored to be written about this tragic beauty. The imagery and honesty is truly amazing. Every word he sings into the microphone you can re-enact the scene in your head, and he doesn't decorate anything. He's quite blunt, and forward with what he has to say. He describes the girl as very fragile, and almost seems like he kept her a secret from the world, which he very much did with Edie. They were very private, and not many were aware of their relationship.
"Ev'rybody knows that baby's got new clothes" he sings, as different scenarios with a woman and her full wardrobe glazes your mind. "She takes just like a woman, and she makes love just like a woman, and she aches just like a woman, but she breaks just like a little girl." he sings, as your heart quenches as he describes how very fragile this girl is. You feel as though you know who this girl is, making her seem very relatable. He describes how she thinks she so responsible, and how she thinks shes mature, and can survive on her one, but once you get rid of the shell, and hurt her, she just crumbles. It seems like she just can't handle the pressure, and is a very emotional person, almost too emotional, and very easily disrupted. "Nobody has to guess that baby can't be blessed, 'till she finally sees that she's like all the rest." He portrays her as if her heads are in the clouds, she loves everyone, but almost feels above them, because of her ability to have all new clothes as he says in verse one, she feels as if she is better than others. "When we meet again, introduced as friends, please don't let on that you knew me well." Again, talking about how she was almost a secret, but he's honest. He lets her know that if they are introduced, act unaquainted. He is quite honest, and just has a way with words so you picture exactly the scene is singing about.
Bob Dylan describes Miss. Sedgwick as a very fragile child inside. she may have a job, and money and be beautiful, but inside shes nothing but a little girl. she can't handle herself. His honesty is admired, and imagery breath-taking. He wasn't afraid to admit, that she was fragile, and state his opinion of her, and how it really was.
